Gelatine Silver Print
Ongoing project
Several of my closest friends are contemporary dancers living in the Netherlands. Some perform with prestigious companies, while others have chosen the independent route. Despite their elite status, earned through years of gruelling training since childhood, their performing careers are fleeting. Most dancers retire by their mid-thirties.
The pandemic's grip tightened, bringing lockdowns to the Netherlands and shuttering theatres. These closures dealt a heavy blow to their already short time on stage. Witnessing their struggle, I couldn't help but wonder - even without the physical dance, could their passion still burn brightly within?
Dancers are always captured in motion, a blur of artistry. But this time, for a photo project, I had a different request: stillness. Because sometimes, in the quiet pause, the essence of who they are speaks volumes.
